Spider veins, also known as telangiectasias, are broken capillaries that commonly appear on the face but can show up anywhere on the body.  These broken blood vessels are a sign of inflammation and become visible when they are enlarged or dilated and are close to the surface. 

 

Causes of Spider Veins:

There are several things that can cause spider veins to become visible.  Although sometimes you may be predisposed due to genetic factors out of your control.  The common causes of spider veins are:

 

Sun Exposure- excessive heat from sun causes inflammation and enlarged blood vessels 

Injury- your body reacts to injury by producing inflammation which can cause the broken capillaries to be more noticeable on the surface skin

Pregnancy- due to hormone fluctuations during pregnancy, visible spider veins are common but are self-limiting.
